World is constantly devising ways & means of improving commutation in cities. Better roads, Flyovers, Synchronized traffic corridor, Lanes, Overbridges, Subways, Overhead & underground transport, separate pedestrian pathway, better vehicles - list is endless for improving average traffic speed on roads in large cities. Even Red lights help in orderly traffic thereby increasing average speed.
Decision to keep maximum vehicle speed to 50 Km/Hr throughout Delhi by Transport Deptt. & Delhi Traffic Police needs revisiting. In any case, uniform speed limit for all roads without considering specific traffic pattern for specific roads is not rational. For example, there is no justification for limiting speed on certain sections of Central Delhi roads, Ridge Road, Dwarka roads, Dwarka-NH8 byepass Road, etc. In any case, how many vehicles practically travel at 50 Km/Hr on Dwarka-NH8 byepass road. Accidents happen inspite of speed limit and should not be used as only yardstick for downward revision. Rather we should ponder on steps needed for raising speed limit for any & every road.
Commuter should benefit from better wide road designs, better vehicle technology. To start with, speed limit may be raised to 70 Km/Hr for Dwarka-NH8 byepass road & 60 Km/Hr for Dwarka roads.
